Do you need new tires?

Posted by

Are you in need of new tires? Are you even sure when you need new tires? Let the experts at AAMCO help you out today.

Here are four warning signs you may need new tires:

1) Tread depth – If the tread of your tires falls below 1/16th of an inch in depth, you are in desperate need for new tires. If you are someone who regularly drives in poor weather, you should even consider new tires when you get to an 1/8th of an inch of tread.

Quick Tip: Use a Lincoln-head penny and put it head down into the tread. If part of Lincoln’s head is covered, you’re safe. Otherwise, they need to be changed immediately!

Quick Tip: Some newer tires have “warning” indicators for low tread. Markings will appear that look like flat rubber bars, which means the tread is getting low.

2) Cracks in the sidewall – Sometimes the tread will not be an obvious sign of the need for a replacement. Cracks in the sidewall can be extremely dangerous if not taken care of in an quick and efficient manner. Cracks in the sidewall can indicate a leak and they could be the cause of a future blowout.

3) Bulges and blisters – When the outer surface of a tire begins to weaken, a “bulge” or a “blister” will form which extends outward from the surface. This can cause a blowout if not handled properly.

4) Vibration –  When you’re getting vibrations in your tires, it is usually a bad sign (despite what the Beach Boys say). You may need a tire alignment, new shock absorbers or just new tires.

A few years ago I was more than broke – but driving about 30 minutes each way to my part time job. I knew I needed new tires, but it just wasn’t a possibility – until my tire popped at dusk on a rural road at least 15 miles from any town. Thankfully there were some good people that stopped to help me.

When I was a kid, my Dad had an old truck that sat in the yard with flat tires and cracked walls. I didn’t realize it was because the walls were cracked that the tires were flat.

That penny tip is a great one to have, since I always have change in a cup holder in my car anyway. Tires are the only contact your car makes with the ground. You’ve got to take care of them.

One time I had a nail stuck in my tire. I took it to this corporate chain and they told me I needed to replace all my tires because they were very weathered. But I had just gotten new tires the year before. I had a friend take a look and he pulled the nail out and come to find out, the nail hadn’t pierced the tire, it was just stuck in the depth.

You’ve got to make sure that your tires are replaced before they become too worn. If you start feeling vibrations you should pull over immediately and inspect your tires. A blow out can cause a serious accident.

Some would argue that the tires on your vehicle are the most important part because they’re the only part that makes contact with the road. They’re, at the very least, significant.
