Cooler weather can be hard on cars. Not only can the cold prevent certain parts of the car from working properly, but the icy roads can make driving safely a challenge. Don’t wait until the roads are icy to prepare. Here are five ways to prep your car for winter that you need to do now.

Cold Weather Auto Repair Tips

Auto Repair for Cold Weather in Overland Park and Kansas City

1. Check Your Brakes

When driving on icy roads, having working breaks is essential for avoiding auto repair. If your brakes haven’t been checked recently, take your car in for auto repair so the mechanic can replace them if needed.

2. Rotate Your Tires

Driving wears out your car’s tires over time, usually in the same spots. Rotating your tires is a good way to distribute the wear and tear, helping prevent you from needing auto repair. Rotate your tires as needed, and don’t hesitate to replace them when it is time.

3. Fill the Fluids

If your fluids are running low from this summer, be sure to fill them up before the cold weather hits. Top off the gas tank, the antifreeze and the windshield wiper fluid to keep you from needing auto repair. Check the oil levels and the transmission fluid as well.

4. Replace Your Windshield Wipers

Ideally, your windshield wipers should be replaced every six months or so to keep them working properly. Have this auto repair task done now while your visibility is still okay to prevent winter pileups due to poor visibility later. This auto repair is quick, easy and cheap, so there is no reason to put it off.

5. Pack Cold Weather Gear

No matter how much auto repair you get before winter hits, there is still no telling what might happen. Be prepared by packing your car with winter essentials now. You will want blankets, flares, a shovel, jumper cables, a first aid kit, and waterproof matches for sure. Kitty litter is also great for providing traction if your car ever gets stuck in the snow.
