In our post, “Midwestern Road Trip Destinations,” we covered great destinations to drive to in the Midwest. We listed places as far away as South Dakota and Michigan, which got us thinking. Maybe you want to get away but only have a day or a weekend to spare. We decided to put together a list of some fantastic places to see just a few hours away right here in Kansas and Missouri.
The Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, Kansas tells the story of the Space Race. The museum features the largest collection of Russian space artifacts outside of Moscow. The Cosmosphere is one of only three museums in the world to exhibit spacecraft flown in all three of the early American space programs: Mercury (Liberty Bell 7,) Gemini, (Gemini 10), and Apollo (Apollo 13).
Classic Road Trip
Route 66 is the classic American highway, and Missouri is its birthplace. You can drive from St. Louis to Springfield to Joplin hitting all of the historic roadside destinations along the way.
Midwest Wine Country
If you enjoy fine wine, then Missouri wine country is for you. Central Missouri’s nationally-recognized wine country has over 120 local wineries and nine wine trails. The vast area spreads from August to Hermann to Ste. Genevieve and even further.
Strataca: Kansas Underground Salt Museum
Located 650 feet underground, the Kansas Underground Salt Museum is in the middle of an ancient Permian Sea. The museum features a 6,000-pound salt block that visitors are invited to touch, and the “Permian Playground,” This museum is prehistoric Earth at its finest.
